How the EView products work

How EView Works

EView Management allows management information from the mainframe (z/OS) and/or AS/400(iSeries) environments to be displayed on an HP Software Operations (OVO) console. The EView OV agent on the mainframe or AS/400 collects management data and coordinates the request and response activities to the EView agent on the Operations Center management server via TCP/IP.

This provides a consolidated server view of the business environment and the ability to proactively manage the mainframe environment through an intuitive and cost effective user interface. In turn, the complexity involved in managing all servers including; mainframe (z/OS) and/or AS/400(iSeries) environments is greatly reduced with a common look and feel tool.

High Level Architecture and Design

The EView agent code is designed to collect messages and data from specific areas of the AS/400 or mainframe, and then send those messages on to the OVO server. You do not distribute EView templates/policies out to the agent. Instead, you distribute the templates/policies back to the agent portion of the OVO server itself, and let the OVO server do the template/policies processing. (This design was used to keep the CPU usage on the system to a minimum. System administrators are very sensitive to how much PCU is being used because AS/400 and mainframe maintenance charges are often billed based on the amount of CPU used by different jobs.

Since the templates/policies and scripts for controlling the system are run on the OVO server, all OVO, templates/policies which you use for other server agents can also be used on AS/400 and mainframes, as well. Automatic and Operator action commands are sent back to the mainframe through the OVO server component via TCP/IP, can be managed. Commands can also be issued from scripts using a utility program that is provided with the agent product.

The EView agents monitor the status and health of the legacy IBM systems and its standard applications. Collection sources span system, application and network messages, performance and resource utilization data via system interface APIs.

EView/390

As a component of the OVO solution, local z/OS message filters extract critical system and network information as specified by the administrator. This information is then sent via TCP/IP and only the specified subset of information is sent to the HP Software Operations management console. These messages can include information about the operating system, system applications, DB2, CICS, MQSeries, JES2, and Websphere.

Messages coming from the EView/390 agent are then routed into existing message groups and included in the message browser for future reference and planning purposes. The messages are logged in the HP Software Operations server message database.

To ensure timely problem resolution, EView/390 Management has been designed to take automatic action, based on deployed message conditions, to address and respond to messages.

Responses include pre-defined automatic actions, operator-initiated actions, problem resolution instructions and interfaces to existing trouble ticket or paging applications. Utilizing the pre-defined tools in the OpenView server simplifies proactive management to increase productivity of operational staff.

The EView/390 Management solution co-exists with already installed management solutions to reduce the complexity involved in managing the mainframe/zSeries environments.

EView/390 Management agent is tightly integrated with OVO management server. Its perceptive agents monitor the mainframe environments and take immediate, corrective action, based upon centrally deployed policies for important or critical events. Messages are communicated to the HP Software Operations management server via TCP/IP.

EView/400

As a component of the HP Software Operations solution, EView/400 Management allows you to manage your IT environment including the AS/400 and iSeries domains. Advanced capabilities include:

  • Sophisticated iSeries event status management to establish proactive enterprise systems management.
  • 2-way communication with the iSeries systems maximize problem resolution and bi-directional acknowledgement of messages coming from the QSYSOPR message queue, and other business critical message queues that the administrator selects.
